New toxic playground under construction at New Roc Garage.

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (May 14, 2025) — The City of New Rochelle heard last week from the Energy Justice Law and Policy Center to present air quality study results on May 6, 2025, highlighting the need for solutions to health issues caused by poor air quality in disadvantaged communities, particularly near Interstate 95. The presentation was made during New York Air Quality Awareness Week.

During community meetings in 2022 with DEC representatives and stakeholders, New Rochelle residents shared their concerns about air pollution from I-95, heavy traffic, and its proximity to housing in New Rochelle. They were also troubled about the construction of multistoried parking lots for New York City commuters that were built adjacent to apartment buildings as well as air pollution produced by nearby commercial and industrial activities.

This might be more credible but for the city’s simultaneous push for a new playground abutting a multistoried parking garage near emission-heavy areas along I-95 which raises questions about its commitment to environmental justice.
