Recommended Reading: Talk of the Sound

I launched Talk of the Sound on September 1, 2008, with no fanfare. The idea was to write stories and let readers discover the site.

In the coming weeks, I expect Talk of the Sound to hit a milestone of 15 million page views as tracked by Google. Amazing numbers for a hyper-local news site covering a narrowly defined coverage area.

Longtime readers may recall my big break came in December when my son, a senior at New Rochelle High School, showed me pages had been ripped out of an assigned book, “Girl, Interrupted”. It was an attempt by the English Department chairperson to mollify Black clergy by censoring a particular chapter where girls discuss oral sex. My reporting was picked up nationally, and the District was compelled to distribute unexpurgated copies of the book.

Needless to say, school officials were not big fans of my work with city officials soon to follow.

New Rochelle has never been the same. In recent years, I expanded our coverage area to the entire Sound Shore, making enemies of more government officials along the way.

Please keep reading, enjoy, share the articles you like — and thanks!
